History of the Sri Lanka Mission in France

Others

Diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and France were formally established on 27 October 1948, shortly after Sri Lanka gained independence. Since then, the relationship has steadily evolved through cooperation in diplomacy, trade, culture, education, tourism, and multilateral engagement.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in France was established in Paris in 1956 to strengthen bilateral relations and promote Sri Lanka’s interests in France and Europe. The Mission serves as the official diplomatic representation of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the French Republic.

During its early years, the Embassy operated from Rue d’Astorg in Paris before relocating to its present premises at 16 Rue Spontini in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. Over the decades, the Mission has expanded its role beyond traditional diplomacy to include economic promotion, tourism, cultural outreach, consular services, and engagement with the Sri Lankan community in France.

The Embassy also represents Sri Lanka to UNESCO, headquartered in Paris, and has actively contributed to cooperation in education, culture, heritage preservation, and intercultural dialogue. Sri Lanka’s participation at UNESCO has strengthened collaboration in areas such as cultural heritage protection, education, and sustainable development.

Over the years, successive Ambassadors and diplomats have played a significant role in promoting friendship and understanding between the peoples of Sri Lanka and France. The Mission has organized numerous cultural events, trade promotion activities, tourism campaigns, academic exchanges, and community outreach programmes that have contributed to enhancing bilateral ties.

Today, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in France continues to serve as an important bridge between the two countries by facilitating diplomatic dialogue, supporting Sri Lankan nationals in France, promoting trade and investment opportunities, and strengthening people-to-people connections. The Mission also provides consular services and conducts outreach programmes, including mobile consular services for Sri Lankan communities residing in different regions of France.
